DESCRIPTION:Amy will explore the use of genealogy to bring stories to light through cloth. Amy Hunt is the curator of The Museum of Frederick County History at Heritage Frederick. She has a degree in Art History from the University of Maryland at College Park and has 25 years of experience curating museum exhibitions. She is a monthly contributor to Frederick Magazine. Born and raised in Frederick County\, Amy\, her husband and her children have lived in Gettysburg\, PA for the last 20 years. She enjoys genealogy\, travel\, reading and visiting cemeteries. DESCRIPTION:Join Adrienne Smith as she discusses Carroll County’s Poor Farm and Springfield Hospital Center as examples of how the State of Maryland cared for its indigent citizens. \nAdrienne is the curator of the Sykesville Gate House Museum which is run by the Town of Sykesville. After seven years as a middle school social studies teacher\, Adrienne moved to Carroll County with her family where she began researching almshouses and asylums in Maryland. Through collaboration with mid-Atlantic hospitals such as Springfield Hospital Center\, her work has helped extend a sense of place by sharing the historical and current role of places of mental healthcare within their broader communities. \nAs always\, there is no registration for Box Lunch Talks. DESCRIPTION:We hope you can join the Historical Society of Carroll County for the ribbon cutting and opening of the Naganna Exhibits Hall & History Learning Center and rededication of the Shriver-Weybright Auditorium on Thursday\, July 9 at 5 pm. At that time\, they will open their new Carroll 250 exhibit\, Carroll County at 250: People\, Place\, and the Making of History. The exhibit will showcase artifacts from the HSCC collection\, in addition to collections from Carroll County families and historic sites. \nOther spaces officially opening on July 9th: \nDoris J. Hull Event Serving Hall \nBarbara Shipley Guthrie Docent Lounge and Gallery \nDave and Sharon Bollinger Kimmey Exhibit Room \nWe want to thank our staff\, board of trustee members\, volunteers\, Samantha Dorsey\, collections consultant\, and especially the Shriver\, Weybright\, and Naganna families without whom this new space and exhibit would not be possible. \nThis is a free event and no registration is needed. \nMore about the exhibit: \nCarroll County at 250: People\, Place\, and the Making of History opens July 9th at the new Naganna Exhibits Hall & History Learning Center at 210 E. Main Street in Westminster. The exhibition will explore how local residents have lived\, shaped\, and remembered the nation’s founding ideals from the Revolutionary era to today. The chronological exhibition brings national history close to home. Through objects\, documents\, and stories drawn from the Society’s collections\, regional scholarship\, and community contributions\, visitors will discover how everyday life in Carroll County reflects broader American change. Guided by three central ideas\, place\, people\, and memory\, the exhibition will highlight how geography\, work\, belief\, and civic life have shaped the county across generations. Additionally\, the exhibit will demonstrate how history is preserved\, interpreted\, and shared over time. The exhibit will be open to the public Wednesday -Friday 11am-4pm weekly and will run through the end of 2027. \nThe Historical Society of Carroll County (HSCC) is discovering a plethora of incredible artifacts that will be on exhibit for the anniversary year\, including General Mordecai Gists’ Revolutionary era cane sword\, a famed Bruce family silver creamer\, original 18th century documents\, commemorative items from the 1976 bicentennial year\, and other never-before-seen items from area museums and private collectors. Several objects on loan include archival documents from Dickinson College in Carlise\, PA and pastel paintings from Frederick Kemmelmeyer\, on loan from the Maryland Center for History and Culture in Baltimore. \nSamantha Dorsey\, a consultant specializing in curation and exhibits in museums in the mid-Atlantic region\, is serving as guest curator of Carroll County at 250: People\, Place\, and the Making of History.

SUMMARY:Box Lunch Talk: Battle of Westminster Corbit's Charge Revisited Presented by Steven Carney
DESCRIPTION:On June 29th\, 1863\, the tragedy of war unfolded upon the streets of Westminster\, MD. This ferocious battle\, although brief\, caused major implications upon the Battle of Gettysburg and the Civil War as a whole. This talk\, given by historian Steven W. Carney\, will discuss the events leading up to “Corbit’s Charge\,” the battle itself\, the aftermath\, and the impact the battle had upon the Civil War. Steven will also discuss highlights of the role Carroll County played within the Gettysburg Campaign and the Civil War. \nSteven Carney is a historian with over 20 years’ experience. He specializes on the American Civil War era and has worked with many organizations to provide educational programming on a variety of topics. His work is featured in the Living History Gazette\, USA Today\, and in film productions for the Travel Chanel\, American Heroes Channel\, and the Legends and Lies television series. Since 2011\, he has been a member and officer with the Pipe Creek Civil War Round Table and was chairman of the annual Corbit’s Charge commemoration event for ten years. Steven has served on the board of several organizations where he planned large-scale events and fundraising efforts for historical preservation. Steven earned a B.A. in Political Science and Sociology and an M.S. in Public Administration from McDaniel College and a certificate in Terrorism Analysis from the University of Maryland. \nAs always\, there is no registration for Box Lunch Talks. SUMMARY:Box Lunch Talk: The Miller’s Apprentice: The Murder of Abraham Lynn and the Execution of Joseph Davis Presented by Dave Owings
DESCRIPTION:Joseph Davis\, 22 years old\, murdered his friend and employer Abraham Lynn on April 5th\, 1872. Lynn was a husband and father\, a prosperous businessman\, and just shy of his 28th birthday. The murder resulted in two trials\, several hearings by the Court of Appeals\, the State Legislature\, and ultimately ended with Governor Pinkney Whyte interviewing witnesses himself. The final act in this story was the dramatic execution of Joe Davis before a crowd of thousands behind the old jail in Westminster. This tragic episode is a precedent – setting legal case and a peek into the lives of average Carroll Countians in the 1870’s. \nDave Owings was born and raised in Carroll County. He was a public school teacher for 30 years in Baltimore and Carroll Counties\, most recently at South Carroll High School. He is currently an adjunct English professor at Carroll Community College. He has two adult daughters and lives in Finksburg with his wife\, Lucy\, and his dog\, Roscoe. \n**NOTE** – As of January 2026\, our Box Lunch Talks are moving to the Society. All Box Lunch Talks will be at 210 E. Main Street in the auditorium and exhibit space. Parking is available in our back parking lot\, behind Ascension Church in the municipal lot (off of Ralph Street)\, and on Main Street. Some Main Street parking is metered and some is free. As always\, there is no registration for Box Lunch Talks. You bring your lunch\, and we provide the drinks and desserts (thanks to our volunteers and staff). You will be able to dunk King George\, they will have Pat Martin’s delicious food\, kids’ games\, and The Cow will once again be providing ice cream. HSCC will also have representatives from many of the historical societies and sites in Carroll County\, an antique fire engine from the Westminster Fire Department\, as well as a cake walk.
