What else does the heritage area do?

Marketing

Any event that heritage travelers should know about should be submitted to our event calendar. Calendar entries are then promoted on social media and included in our monthly event round-up newsletter, the Drum Beat.

Trainings

Gather with other organizations based in the Heritage Area for learning opportunities and professional development. The Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area will pay the registration fee for webinars from organizations like the American Association for State and Local History, host a gathering to view the content together, and then allow group discussion of the content after the program.

We also hold occasional in-person and virtual programs on special topics that are relevant to our region: view our recorded webinars and YouTube and make sure to sign up to get the latest updates from the Heritage Area through the Mason Dixon Dispatch.

One-on-One Support

The Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area is a small team with three full-time staff members and one part-time staff member. We want to work directly with your organization or municipality if there’s a topic on which we can provide assistance. Previous meetings have included assistance with planning for the future of a historic property owned by a town or city, meeting with small historical societies to provide advice on collections management and nonprofit governance, advising organizations on funding sources for specific goals, and more. Reach out to Heritage Area staff for more information.

Connecting Sites in the Heritage Area

It’s easy for organizations to narrow their focus to their general area and usual partners. The Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area has a three-county mission and works to connect travelers with experiences in all three counties. We also work to connect organizations and municipalities to each other across the Heritage Area. We can help identify shared challenges, solutions, and opportunities for collaboration. Regular in-person and virtual convenings to discuss preparation for the US 250th are a way these connections are being made.
