SUMMARY:Cannons & Caverns Bus Tour: Antietam Battlefield and Crystal Grottoes Caverns
DESCRIPTION:Explore Antietam Battlefield and Crystal Grottoes Caverns on Saturday\, October 18th\, as the Washington County Historical Society travels back in time to visit our historic landscapes. The bus tour will meet at the JC Penney parking lot located on the East side of the Valley Mall in Hagerstown\, MD. The group will depart from this location by bus at 9:00 AM\, but guests should plan to arrive 15 minutes prior to departure. \nThe first stop of the day will be Antietam National Battlefield\, site of the famous 1862 Civil War battle. Dr. Tom Clemens\, an Antietam Battlefield Guide and author\, will join us for a tour of the battlefield by bus. After a catered boxed lunch\, we will head to our second stop\, Crystal Grottoes Caverns\, discovered in 1920. It is the only public\, commercial cave in the State of Maryland. We will return to the JC Penney parking lot at the Valley Mall by 3:30 PM. \nPrice per guest is $60 for WCHS members and $75 for non-members (tickets include all fees for Crystal Grottoes and Antietam National Battlefield). During this live historical theater event\, guests can sip spirits and meet with spirits as they stroll through Rose Hill Cemetery\, gathering clues to solve a 1920s murder mystery. ACT Black Box Studio will portray historical Hagerstown figures. The historic Rose Hill Cemetery setting offers an opportunity to see the Mausoleum and the Washington Confederate Cemetery\, in which are buried Confederate soldiers who fell at the Battles of Antietam and South Mountain. Will you be able to solve a 100-year-old mystery before the sun sets? \nThis event takes place inside Rose Hill Cemetery. Parking is provided in the cemetery or along S. Potomac Street. Featuring live music\, spooky cocktails\, and refreshments. Guests should plan to spend approximately 90 minutes walking through Rose Hill Cemetery. 1920s attire is encouraged but not required. This event is generously sponsored by the City of Hagerstown and the James & Mary Schurz Foundation. All proceeds benefit the Washington County Historical Society of Hagerstown\, MD.

DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, July 11\, Thomas Vitanza and Catherine Lavoie present the history and architecture of the Herald Mail building at 100 Summit Avenue\, Hagerstown\, a significant building designed by a modernist architectural firm in the 1970s that became a cutting-edge newspaper printing plant for Washington County. \nThomas Vitanza is a recently retired Senior Historical Architect for the National Park Service Historic Preservation Training Center\, and Catherine Lavoie is an architectural historian for the NPS HABS program and author (with Lisa Pfueller Davidson) of Buildings of Maryland\, published by the Society of Architectural Historians. \nThis month’s drink is the Harvey Wallbanger\, a cocktail combining vodka\, orange juice\, and Galliano\, a popular drink during the 1970s\, when the Herald Mail building was constructed. DESCRIPTION:Join the Washington County Historical Society in celebrating the 200th Anniversary of the Miller House at a special fundraising Culture & Cocktails on Saturday\, June 14\, 2025\, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. \nWCHS Curator Abigail Koontz will present\, “The Many Faces of the Miller House\,” a historical talk to celebrate the Miller House 200th that will share an overview of the Miller House’s many residents and eras\, from the original Price family in 1825\, to the house’s “Lost Years” of the Civil War\, and to the present. \nThis C&C event will take place outside in the Miller House Garden. Doors open at 5:00 PM. Live acoustic music\, raffle baskets\, and refreshments will be offered in the Miller House Garden leading up to the talk. Talk begins at 6:00 PM. \nThe drink of the evening will be Dr. Victor Miller Jr.’s “Miller House Punch\,” a recipe from the WCHS archives! \nThe C&C program is generously sponsored by the James & Mary Schurz Foundation. Tickets are $55.20 per person.
