SUMMARY:Voices of the Maryland 400: Maryland's Revolutionary War Soldiers at the Battle of Brooklyn in 1776
DESCRIPTION:Voices of the Maryland 400: Maryland’s Revolutionary War Soldiers at the Battle of Brooklyn in 1776: \nIn August 1776\, the Continental Army suffered a terrible defeat at the Battle of Brooklyn\, the first major battle of the Revolutionary War. The battle nearly saw the complete destruction of the American army\, but a desperate stand by a contingent of Maryland soldiers helped to stave off the British and allow the Americans to fight another day. \nLearn more about these soldiers\, now called the Maryland 400\, and hear first-hand accounts of their actions at the battle. This talk will also discuss the lives of several soldiers from the unit\, exploring them and their families during and after the Revolutionary War \nSpeaker’s Bio: \nOwen Lourie is a senior archivist at the Maryland State Archives specializing in Maryland government and military history during the colonial era and early republic. He holds an M.A. in history from the University of Maryland\, Baltimore County and a B.A. from Kenyon College in American Studies. Owen is the director of Finding the Maryland 400\, a research project studying the First Maryland Regiment. He is the author Finding the Maryland 400\, a history of the Maryland Line\, chronicling the soldiers of the Maryland 400 during the Revolutionary War\, due out this summer.

SUMMARY:Revolutionary War Historic Marker Dedication
DESCRIPTION:An interpretive marker commemorating the march of Anthony Wayne and a thousand Pennsylvania troops through Frederick County in 1781 will be dedicated at a December 6\, 2025 ceremony in Riverside Park on the Monocacy River. The ceremony is sponsored by the Sgt. Lawrence Everhart Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution\, and is being organized in partnership with the Frederick County U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission. \nWayne and his troops left York Pennsylvania on May 26\, 1781\, and passed though Frederick County on their way to reinforce the troops under Lafayette’s command in Virginia who were attempting to hold back a much larger British invasion force under Cornwallis. When Wayne combined forces with Lafayette\, this changed the course of the war in Virginia; Cornwallis turned back toward the seaboard\, resulting in the American-French victory at Yorktown. \nThe interpretive marker to be dedicated\, entitled “Revolutionary War Encampment\,” has been made possible by a grant from the Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area\, a certified heritage area of the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority.

SUMMARY:SAR 250 Speakers Series - "The 1774 Summer of Discontent: How Colonial Governors Unified Patriots for War"
DESCRIPTION:Jim Bish\, Revolutionary War historian\, and President of Culpeper Minutemen Chapter VASSAR\, will reveal the importance of the many local Resolves that were penned in the summer of 1774\, especially in the middle Atlantic States of Maryland and Virginia. The local commitment against the actions of England became paramount in the success of the Revolution. Local residents reacted to the probable abolition of their rights by the British. This democratic action was the first step to declaring independence two years later. In doing so\, the county freeholders and inhabitants bought into the upcoming struggle while producing a purely democratic set of documents which show a united clarity of purpose. Their collective local actions and their statements\, county by county\, have rarely been duplicated\, previously or since. Virginia and Maryland produced the most comprehensive set of resolves compared to anywhere in the colonies leading up to the Revolutionary War. These resolves fortified their commitment to the ever-strengthening common cause of America. During the 1774 summer of discontent\, the Royal Governor’s actions helped to unify Virginians and Marylanders for war\, something that Massachusetts and the other colonies needed in the following years.

SUMMARY:250th Anniversary Maryland Rifle Companies
DESCRIPTION:The Sgt. Lawrence Everhart Chapter\, SAR\, and the Frederick and Carrollton Manor Chapters\, DAR\, invite you to the commemoration of the 250th Anniversary of the organization of the Maryland Rifle Companies which took place in Fredericktown on 21 June 1775. This event is being organized in partnership with the Frederick County U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission. \nOn 14 June 1775\, at the same time that the Second Continental Congress named George Washington as Commander-in-Chief of the new Continental Army\, it directed that ten companies of riflemen be raised in the frontier regions of Pennsylvania\, Maryland\, and Virginia. Accordingly\, the United States Army considers June 14\, 1775 as its birthdate. \nMaryland was assigned the responsibility of raising two rifle companies\, and its delegates assigned this task to the Frederick County Committee of Observation. At a meeting at the County Courthouse in Fredericktown on 21 June\, chaired by John Hanson\, the Committee of Observation created the two companies and appointed their officers. \nRecall that in 1775\, Frederick County encompassed all of western Maryland\, including present-day Montgomery County\, part of Carroll County\, and Washington\, Allegheny\, and Garrett Counties to the west. Organizations from those areas are invited to participate in this event. \nThe two Maryland Rifle Companies were commanded by Captain Michael Cresap (son of Thomas Cresap)\, and Captain Thomas Price. \nAfter the creation of the Rifle Companies on June 21\, the next few weeks were spent in furnishing the riflemen with rifles and other equipment. On July 18\, the two Maryland companies\, consisting of about 130 men\, set off for Massachusetts on foot\, marching 550 miles in 22 days! No Continental uniforms here: they wore hunting shirts\, often with fringes\, round hats\, leather leggings\, and many had their faces painted\, Indian style. Along the way they often gave demonstrations of their superb marksmanship. \nIn August 1775\, with the arrival of Maryland\, Virginia\, and Pennsylvania Rifle Companies in Massachusetts\, the revolutionary Army became truly Continental. They joined in the siege of Boston under the command of General Washington. The siege ultimately led to the evacuation of the British forces from Boston\, never to return. \nFrederick Countians and all western Marylanders can justly take pride in our contribution to creating the Continental Army which\, over the following eight years\, won our independence and created a new\, sovereign Nation.
