SUMMARY:The History of the Middletown Volunteer Fire Company
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Middletown Valley Historical Society on Sunday\, May 17\, at 2 pm\, at the Middletown Volunteer Fire Company (MVFC) Activities Building\, 1 Fireman’s Lane\, Middletown\, when Brian Beaulieu\, Executive Board Member of the MVFC\, will present the History of the Middletown Volunteer Fire Company. \nBrian will describe the Fire Company’s progression from 1803 until today. \nFire service in the area dates back to at least 1803\, although the department was not officially founded until January 26\, 1894. Records indicate that a major fire in 1892 at the old tannery made clear the need for organized fire protection in Middletown. \nAfter Brian’s talk\, around 3:30 pm\, guests and children are invited to visit the Middletown Volunteer Fire Station where he will showcase some of the Company’s special fire equipment from the past and present. Refreshments served at both locations.

SUMMARY:Revolutionary Times in Burkittsville
DESCRIPTION:The historic village of Burkittsville was founded on a crossroads that has linked it to the broader story of the United States for over 250 years. As our country marks its Semiquincentennial anniversary in 2026\, South Mountain Heritage Society (SMHS) is opening a special exhibition exploring the role Burkittsville and the surrounding communities of the lower Middletown Valley have played throughout the 18th and 19th centuries in our nation’s founding. \nJody Brumage is an active Frederick County public historian and current Archivist and Museum Manager for Heritage Frederick and President\, Historian and Curator of SMHS. Jody will provide an overview of the SMHS exhibit and share some of the unique stories and artifacts of Revolutionary times in the Burkittsville area.
