Photographer John Milleker will be encamped at the Newcomer House on the Antietam National Battlefield on Saturday, May 10 and Sunday, May 11 demonstrating historically accurate Civil War era wet plate collodion photography and taking photos in the same way Matthew Brady and Alexander Gardner would have in 1862. A formal talk about the wet-plate photography process and early women photographers will be given at 11:30 a.m. each day.
From 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. visitors will be able to create a free cyanotype (sun art) card to take home. This activity is for adults and children alike.
This weekend also offers a unique opportunity for families and individuals to schedule a sitting for special Mother’s Day tintype portraits. Civil War period clothing will be available although tintypes of families in contemporary clothing can be quite striking.
Reservations for sittings can be made at: https://johnmilleker.com/store/wetplate_prepaid/ (Cost varies by size of tintype). Reservations are recommended! Please plan on approximately one hour following your session before the final product will be ready to take home.
The Newcomer House will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Volunteer docents will be available to share knowledge about the Newcomer House and offer assistance to visitors to the three-county Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area.
