Carroll 250 Speakers Series: Ellsworth Cemetery Stories & Tour

Ongoing Opportunities

  • Saturday, May 10 at 2:00 PM

Join the HSCC at Ellsworth Cemetery for a special event as Diane Boettcher, local researcher, will provide a tour of the historical African American cemetery.

Ellsworth Cemetery was created on December 21, 1876, when seven prominent members of Westminster community, including Black Union Army Veterans, filed Maryland Articles of Incorporation to provide a burial place “for the Colored residents of Westminster, Maryland”. The ground on which the Ellsworth Cemetery stands was sold to the group by the Estate of Elias Yingling for the sum of one dollar.

Over 700 individuals from all walks of life rest in the cemetery. You will learn about the Veterans from the Civil War and both World Wars, ministers, midwives, educators and farmers. Their stories are the stories of our community, our county and our Nation. They make a fascinating introduction to local history you probably never knew.

The tour is suitable for all ages. The tour requires standing for over an hour and walking on uneven ground. Please wear comfortable shoes and dress appropriately for the weather.

The cemetery is located on Leidy Road near Westminster. The tour begins at 2 pm. Please arrive at the cemetery gate 10 minutes before the tour for check-in. Use 847 Leidy Road for GPS directions. Parking is available across the street.
