“A Wonderful Tenacity of Life”: The Story of Old Baldy, General George Meade’s Trusted Warhorse

October 4 @ 3:00 pm
Photo of Dr. Jennifer Murray

Dr. Jennifer Murray explores the life, death, and commemoration of Old Baldy, General George G. Meade’s warhorse. Meade purchased the horse in September 1861 and rode him through the spring of 1864. The faithful steed was wounded at least five times and was once described by Meade as having a “wonderful tenacity of life.” Arguably no Civil War mount accumulated a record of service as distinguished as Old Baldy.

Murray is a history professor at Shepherd University and the director of the George Tyler Moore Center for the Study of the Civil War.

This presentation is free with museum admission.
