#FindYourPark in the Heart of the Civil War
July 22, 2016
The National Park Service is celebrating its 100th anniversary on August 25, 2016. To celebrate this centennial anniversary, you're invited to #FindYourPark in the Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area. All NPS units are fee-free from Thursday, August 25 to Thursday, August 28. Here are a few suggestions for how to mark this landmark in Civil War Maryland:
- Enrich your visit to the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park with a free launch boat ride under the recently-raised Western Maryland Railroad Lift Bridge in Williamsport (above)
- Experience the roar of cannonfire at Antietam National Battlefield's Artillery Weekend
- Enjoy a celebratory cupcake at Monocacy National Battlefield
- Explore Harpers Ferry National Historical Park through a photographer's lens at a Centennial Instameet
- Escape the heat with a paddle down the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail
- Encounter stories of the 1862 Maryland Campaign along the Appalachian National Scenic Trail as it crosses through Maryland at South Mountain State Battlefield
- Educate yourself on architectural styles on a walking tour of a historic district listed on the National Register of Historic Places (turning 50 this year!), such as downtown Frederick
- Extend the Every Kid in a Park pass for fourth-graders and their families with a trip to a non-federal historic site in the Heritage Area
- Share your experiences on social media using the hashtags #FindYourPark, #CivilWarMaryland, and #CivilWarSelfies
