SUMMARY:Harpers Ferry Civil War Round Table's Tour of the Battle of Hagerstown
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Harpers Ferry Civil War Round Table in Hagerstown\, Maryland for a guided tour of the Battle of Hagerstown\, at 3:00 PM on Sunday\, August 24. Much like Gettysburg\, where all roads converged and dictated where the armies would meet\, the roads crossing the area of Lee’s retreat out of Pennsylvania led to the Hub City—Hagerstown. Gaining and holding Hagerstown was the key to protecting or attacking Lee’s defensive line between Williamsport and Sharpsburg in the days after Pickett’s Charge. Small battles and large skirmishes occurred daily during Lee’s retreat\, and one of the most consequential was the Battle of Hagerstown on July 6. This became one of the largest cavalry battles of the war and was fought mostly in a city environment. \nOur guide on the tour is Stephen Bockmiller\, a lifelong military history enthusiast. Steve has written extensively\, including two books\, about the USS Constellation and about regional Civil War history. His current writing projects include the Battle of Hagerstown and Civil War-era stories from the Middletown Valley. Steve serves on Baltimore’s Advisory Board of Historic Ships and represents Hagerstown on the Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area Advisory Board. He lives near Waynesboro\, PA with his wife Stefania\, and he serves as Deputy Director in Hagerstown’s Planning and Economic Development Department. \nThis tour is free and open to the public\, but you must reserve your space by contacting Chris Craig at ccraig@laurellodge.com or 304-433-1260. We will carry on in light rain (bring an umbrella)\, but you will receive email notification if there is a weather cancellation. Much of the Battle of Hagerstown took place in the city’s downtown. Our tour will begin with the first stage of the battle in downtown\, where we will walk about nine city blocks. This will be followed by a driving tour with stops along Virginia Avenue between Hagerstown and Williamsport. (Carpooling is encouraged.) Meet at the intersection of Baltimore and South Potomac Streets\, Hagerstown\, MD. This is half a block east of Meritus Park. The best parking option is in the University District Parking Deck on North Potomac Street\, just north of Public Square. The entire tour will take about 2.5 hours. \nPhoto: Jarvis Wentworth\, 1st Vermont Cavalry\, mortally wounded July 6\, 1863 at Hagerstown\, MD.

SUMMARY:Summer Lecture Series: "Frederick: the Crossroads of the Civil War" - John Schildt
DESCRIPTION:The Antietam Institute will be wrapping up the Summer Lecture Series on August 25 with local historian\, John Schildt presenting Frederick: the Crossroads of the Civil War \nJust south of the Mason-Dixon Line\, Frederick\, Maryland\, was poised at the crossroads of the Civil War. Here\, Confederate troops passed west to the Battles of Antietam and South Monocacy\, while Union troops marched north to Gettysburg and south to raid the resources of the Shenandoah Valley. Both heroes and villains were made in the spired city\, such as Dame Barbara Fritchie\, who is said to defied General Jackson; General Jubal Early\, who threatened to put the town to the torch; and the local doctors and nurses who cared for thousands of wounded soldiers. Join local historian John Schildt as he recounts the fascinating history of Frederick in the Civil War. \nReverend John Schildt graduated from Shepherd College\, Wesley Theological Seminary and has studied at Western Maryland College\, Gettysburg Seminary and West Virginia University. John’s first book\, September Echoes\, published in 1960\, was the first on Antietam since Francis Palfrey in 1887. This led to an appointment to the Maryland Centennial Committee. He wrote the account of the battle for the Official Centennial Program and was the guest speaker for the 125h anniversary. John has been a lecturer and guide for several Civil War organizations\, Round Tables\, and many other groups. John led his first tour of Antietam in 1958. Since then\, 2\,000 additional tours have followed. John has written over thirty-five books relating the various aspects of the Maryland Campaign of 1862 and local history. This list includes Drums along the Antietam\, Roads to Antietam\, Four Days in October\, Islands of Mercy\, and Roads to Gettysburg. He and his wife and daughter live in Sharpsburg. \nCome join leading historians and scholars as they discuss intriguing topics about their latest works and research on the Maryland Campaign and the Civil War during the Antietam Institute’s Civil War Summer Lecture Series. See the complete 2025 schedule. \nThese indoors programs are held in McKinley Hall at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on Monday evenings at 7:00 p.m. The church is located at 209W Main Street with a small parking area off the alley. More parking is available on Main and Hall Streets. These lectures free and open to the public. Each week the Antietam Institute holds a drawing in which the proceeds support the Save Historic Antietam Foundation. Be sure to check their Facebook page for updates and changes to the schedule.

SUMMARY:Catoctin Furnace Living History Festival
DESCRIPTION:From Thursday\, September 11\, until Sunday\, September 14\, 2025\, the Catoctin Furnace Historical Society will present seven public performances of Iron Will\, set between October 11 and 13\, 1780\, at Catoctin Furnace. In 1780\, the Continental Army convinced the co-owners of Catoctin Furnace—Maryland’s first governor\, Thomas Johnson\, and his brother James\, the ironmaster at the furnace—to manufacture 31 tons of shells\, which were fired\, eventually\, at the decisive Battle of Yorktown. \nThis original production based on historical events focuses on the personal stories of people at the furnace—owners and workers\, European immigrants and African slaves—against the historical backdrop of the Revolutionary War and the development of Maryland’s industry. \nAudiences will be able to immerse themselves in the lives of the people at the Revolutionary War era furnace by attending site-specific performances at historic locations\, including the Collier Log Cabin\, the fully functional blacksmith’s shop\, the furnace\, and other outdoor locations.

SUMMARY:One Vast Hospital – Civil War Walking Tour in Downtown Frederick
DESCRIPTION:Saturdays and Sundays from April through September\nWalk in the footsteps of doctors\, nurses\, soldiers and civilians who cared for 8\,000 wounded soldiers in Downtown Frederick. \nJoin NMCWM docents for a walking tour of Downtown Frederick focused on the city’s role as a makeshift hospital in the final months of 1862 every Saturday (10:30 a.m.) and Sunday (2:00 p.m.) from April through September. \nTickets are $15 and include admission to the National Museum of Civil War Medicine in addition to the walking tour. Tickets are free for Museum members\, but you must still reserve your spot. Reservations will be accepted on a first come first served basis. \nIn September 1862\, a newspaper correspondent from the Philadelphia Inquirer referred to Frederick as “one vast hospital.” In the aftermath of America’s bloodiest day at Antietam on September 17\, 1862\, over 8\,000 wounded soldiers\, Union and Confederate\, were brought to make-shift hospital wards in Frederick’s churches\, schools\, hotels\, and private homes. From the diaries and letters of the surgeons\, soldiers\, and civilians who were there\, this guided walking tour will explore the locations of the city’s Civil War hospitals in churches\, schools\, and public buildings. Many of those same buildings still make up the historic district today.
