DESCRIPTION:There are many stories from Burkittsville’s long history\, some better known than others. This special walking tour will reveal forgotten stories from Burkittsville’s past\, some funny and scandalous\, some tragic and humanizing\, and others just plain unusual! What links these stories together is their power in connecting us to the past and the many generations that have called Burkittsville home over its long history.​ \nJoin South Mountain Heritage Society for this special tour! They will begin in front of the museum at 3 East Main Street at 4:30 pm on Saturday\, October 10\, 2026. The tour will last approximately 1 hour and fifteen minutes and will cover about ¾ of a mile in length. Please note that the tour route will include uneven surfaces and some moderate hills. Tour will be held rain or shine\, so please dress accordingly! Admission is by donation\, suggested at $10 per person (please pay upon arrival).

DESCRIPTION:Starting on October 10th\, tour the most haunted building in Frederick – the National Museum of Civil War Medicine. Explore the building’s history amidst the darkened galleries and offices. On the tour\, staff and volunteers will share stories of Civil War embalmers\, the building’s most infamous tenants\, and their first-hand accounts of paranormal activity that have given the building its spooky reputation. In addition to a trip through the museum galleries\, the tour provides exclusive access to the third floor where numerous sightings have occurred. \n48 East Patrick Street was built in the 1830s. Before it became the National Museum of Civil War Medicine\, the building was a furniture shop and a site of Civil War embalming\, as well as home to many Frederick residents and their businesses. The past still echoes through the halls of the building. The haunting sights\, sounds\, and sensations from the building have been reported for decades by the people who lived and worked in the building over many years. Join us to hear our staff and volunteers’ stories first-hand. \nYou are invited to bring your own cameras and ghost-finding apps – who knows what you’ll capture! Flash photography and LIVE streaming are prohibited. \nTours will be given on October 10\, 17\, 24\, and 25\, from 5:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m. This year the NMCWM is offering two special Halloween tours on Saturday\, October 31\, from 5:30 p.m.-8:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.-10:30 p.m. During these special Halloween night tours\, you’ll have additional time to tour the galleries without a guide.

DESCRIPTION:“We will proceed to the Ferry.” \nWith these words\, abolitionist John Brown launched an attack on the U.S. Armory at Harpers Ferry—an event that helped ignite the Civil War. Follow in the footsteps of Brown’s small “Provisional Army” during this solemn five-mile walk from his headquarters in Washington County\, Maryland\, to Harpers Ferry. This rarely offered experience invites participants to consider how acts of moral conviction have influenced the nation’s course across generations. In addition to the processional walk led by retired park Chief Historian Dennis Frye\, this event includes shuttle service to Brown’s headquarters at the Kennedy Farm (Maryland)\, presentations\, music\, and an authentic period meal. \nRegistration is required for this event due to limited space. \nPlease note that this rain-or-shine event includes elevation changes and walking on road and gravel surfaces. \nWalk Length and Difficulty: Approx. DESCRIPTION:Come out and see a large collection of Willys and Jeeps at the historic Union Mills Homestead. This is one of the largest vintage Jeep shows on the East Coast. This year is the 20th Anniversary of this annual event. See World War II and Korean War era military Jeeps and the civilian Jeeps and utility vehicles that are the grandfathers of today’s Jeeps & SUVs. \nJeeps can be entered into one of three categories at the show: Best Military Jeep\, Best CJ (Civilian Jeep) and Best Non-Jeep. The non-jeep category features Willys trucks and station wagons. Everyone in attendance will vote on each of the three categories to name the winners. \nTours of the Historic house and Mill available for a small fee from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm\, with the last tour starting at 3:00 pm. Food and drink will be available to purchase on site.

SUMMARY:The Roads Less Traveled: The Rustic Roads in Frederick County
DESCRIPTION:Frederick County’s Road system is dominated by modern well-paved thoroughfares. However\, tucked away among the county’s towns and farms\, including some in the Middletown Valley\, are rustic roads dating back to the mid-1700s – and were frequently used during the Civil War. Susan Hanson will discuss the rich history of these historic pathways and efforts to preserve them. \nSusan Hanson was the founder of The Friends of Rural Roads and has been a leading advocate for the preservation of Frederick County’s rustic roads for over 25 years. She operated her own business\, Catoctin Pottery\, in the historic Lewis Mill for 40 years. At present\, she is the Vice Chair of Frederick County’s Rustic Roads Commission.

DESCRIPTION:The Washington County Historical Society will host their second annual Spirits & Spirits fundraiser on Sunday\, October 18\, 2026\, from 3:00 to 6:00 PM at Springfield Farm in Williamsport\, MD. This event will feature a murder mystery set in 1776 with historical characters portrayed by ACT Black Box Studio. Walk the grounds of historic Springfield Manor as you solve the mystery and enjoy themed cocktails and refreshments by local businesses. \nThis event is held at historic Springfield Farm owned by the Town of Williamsport. Springfield’s main house was originally built ca. 1760s\, and the property also contains a historic springhouse\, stillhouse\, and barn. During the Civil War\, Union forces occupied Springfield Farm\, situated in Williamsport near the Potomac River\, to prevent Confederate troops from gaining control of the canal. Soldiers from the 13th Massachusetts camped at Springfield while the home’s residents left the property. \nThis event is a wonderful way to support local history and explore historic Springfield Farm. Guests are encouraged to wear 1770s clothing and costumes\, and comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Parking provided at Springfield Barn. DESCRIPTION:Meet the Greek families who settled in Westminster in the early 1900s through the 1950s. They came from different areas of Greece\, Cyprus\, and Turkey\, but they formed a strong community that supported one another through the Great Depression and the staff shortages of WWII. They helped one another establish a variety of businesses including hat-making\, restaurants\, department stores\, theaters\, and candy-making. \nAntigoni Lefteris Ladd is CEO of Tigrett Leadership Academy\, developing and instructing leadership workshops. Prior to co-founding Tigrett Corp. with her husband\, Antigoni was Senior Vice President of the Consumer Bankers Association and served for 15 years as Director of the Graduate School of Retail Bank Management at the University of Virginia. She has 40 years’ experience in leadership education. Her management experience has been in both private industry and national trade associations. \nAs always\, there is no registration for Box Lunch Talks. You bring your lunch\, and the HSCC provides the drinks and desserts (thanks to our volunteers and staff). They will be holding a nonperishable food drive for Carroll Food Sunday. DESCRIPTION:Join the South Mountain State Battlefield Cannon Detachment at the historic Newcomer House on Antietam National Battlefield as they portray Union Artillerymen from the 1862 battle on Saturday\, October 24 and Sunday\, October 25. Discover the significance of artillery during the Battle of Antietam and learn the story of John Tidball\, Captain of Battery A\, 2nd US Artillery\, and his men as they pulled artillery up the steep hill beside the Newcomer House. Cannon firing demonstrations will be presented both days at 11:00am\, 1:00 pm\, and 3:00 pm. This program and demonstrations are FREE and open to the public. \nThe Newcomer House is located on the edge of Antietam National Battlefield at 18422 Shepherdstown Pike\, Keedysville\, MD. The house is open 10 am to 4 pm weekends in April\, May\, October and November\, and Tuesday through Sunday from June through September. Before it became the National Museum of Civil War Medicine\, the building was a furniture shop and a site of Civil War embalming\, as well as home to many Frederick residents and their businesses. The past still echoes through the halls of the building. The haunting sights\, sounds\, and sensations from the building have been reported for decades by the people who lived and worked in the building over many years. Join us to hear our staff and volunteers’ stories first-hand. \nYou are invited to bring your own cameras and ghost-finding apps – who knows what you’ll capture! SUMMARY:Carroll 250 Event: Maryland Invaded! Presented by Stan Haynes
DESCRIPTION:During the Civil War\, in September 1862\, Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s army crossed the Potomac River from Virginia and invaded the Union state of Maryland. Lee wanted to turn Maryland to the Confederacy. It did not go as he hoped\, with much of the population indifferent\, or hostile\, to the Rebels. And then came the Battle of Antietam. Join author Stan Haynes for a discussion of the invasion and the reaction of Marylanders to it. \nStan Haynes is an attorney and author who spent his career as a litigator with a Baltimore law firm. He has had a lifelong interest in American history. His most recent book\, And Slavery No More\, is historical fiction\, and is set during the Civil War. This book will be on sale the evening of the talk. \nHe has two other historical novels that explore the years before the war. One\, And Tyler No More\, is set in the 1840s and the other\, And Union No More\, is set in the 1850s. \nHe has also written three nonfiction books on the history of presidential nominating conventions. Two of these\, The First American Political Conventions and President-Making in the Gilded Age\, concern the conventions held in the Nineteenth Century. His third book on the conventions\, Roosevelt to Roosevelt\, is about the conventions held in the first half of the Twentieth Century. DESCRIPTION:Join the HSCC on Thursday\, November 5th at 6pm for an evening of shared memories of Carroll County businesses\, entrepreneurs\, and main street shops. Sarah Coster\, guest curator of HSCC’s new Main Street at Work Exhibit\, will offer a special presentation about the exhibit to kick off the evening. Following her presentation\, attendees will be encouraged to sign up for a three-minute podium slot to share a memory of a local shop\, business\, or special community entrepreneur. To reserve an earlier time slot in the evening email Outreach and Events Director Laura Bankard at lbankard@hsccmd.org. To keep the memories coming\, a factory whistle will sound giving folks a 30 second wrap up warning at the podium. This is a free event open to all! DESCRIPTION:The Antietam Institute will wrap up their “Ancestors at Antietam” programs on November 7\, with a special tour of the historic St. Mark’s Episcopal Church and the Woodley Farm. The program was arranged by Saida Russell and Rev. Dr. Brandt L. Montgomery. \nSaida and her family own Woodley Farm which is on Sharpsburg Pike and just down a dirt lane from St. Mark’s Episcopal Church\, Lappans. Dr. Thomas J. Maddox\, her great-great-great grandfather\, was one of the founding fathers of the church. Woodley Farm has been in the family since before the Civil War and holds a protective agricultural easement with the state of Maryland. \nNestled in the scenic countryside at Lappans Crossroads\, St. Mark’s Episcopal Church stands as a significant landmark\, recognized on the National Register of Historic Places. The church has been in continual use since its construction in 1849\, a testament to the vision of the leadership of Saint James School\, who sought to provide worship services for the local faithful community. James Maddox\, a respected physician and early church leader\, played a pivotal role by donating an acre of land for the church’s construction. \nThe building was completed in just four months at a total cost of $1\,385. Constructed from native limestone—a practical and locally favored material in Washington County—the church’s architecture embodies the influence of religious movements that advocated for a revival of the Gothic style within Anglican and Episcopal churches. This architectural choice reflected a broader movement to renew traditional religious practices. \nThe church features impressive 17-foot walls\, a pitched gabled roof with a portico\, and a steeple that commands attention. Inside\, many of the original furnishings remain intact\, including a gallery that was specifically intended for enslaved worshippers. This gallery is still accessible to visitors\, offering a tangible connection to the church’s historical narrative. The interior is further distinguished by a soaring ceiling supported by Gothic-arched framing. The picturesque setting of St. Mark’s is enhanced by a stone wall that now encloses both the church and its cemetery. As a parish\, St. Mark’s is committed to uplifting African American stories that are integral to its history. During the Civil War\, the church served a crucial role\, especially in the aftermath of the 1862 Battle of Antietam and the 1863 Battle of Gettysburg\, when it became a sanctuary for the wounded—many of whom received care from Dr. Maddox. \nRead more about the guest speakers\, Rev. DESCRIPTION:25 Miles\, 38 Hills\, and a Completely Unnecessary Amount of Civil War History \nWhat started as a simple bike ride through Gettysburg has somehow turned into a 5\,000-mile obsession. For years\, Emmy Award-winning editor/producer and storyteller Neil Beller has driven 38 miles from his home in Carroll County to Gettysburg\, unloaded his mountain bike\, and ridden a roughly 25-mile loop around one of the most famous battlefields in American history. \nAlong the way\, something unexpected happened: Neil started paying attention. The monuments became landmarks. The landmarks became stories. The stories became questions. And the questions led him down some fascinating\, and occasionally ridiculous rabbit holes into the history of the Battle of Gettysburg. \nIn Good Morning\, Gettysburg!\, Neil takes audiences on a humorous ride through the battlefield as seen from the seat of a bicycle. He explores the roads\, monuments\, farms and fields that have become part of his Saturday-morning routine while sharing the history behind the places he passes every week. But this isn’t a traditional Civil War lecture. \nNeil mixes history with personal storytelling\, observations from thousands of miles on the battlefield\, encounters with locals\, reenactors\, tourists\, yard sales\, and hills that seem to get steeper every week. And perhaps most importantly… Why does Gettysburg have so many damn hills? \nPart history lesson\, part travelogue and part mid-life bicycle adventure\, Good Morning\, Gettysburg! is a funny and personal look at how repeatedly riding through a historic landscape can change the way you see it. \nYou may come away knowing more about the Battle of Gettysburg.
