SUMMARY:Revolutionary Maryland: Freedom of the Press Then and Now
DESCRIPTION:The Revolutionary Maryland: Freedom of the Press Then and Now traveling exhibition\, which opened at the Arundel Center on Tuesday\, January 13\, and the Museum of Eastern Shore Culture on Saturday\, January 17\, explores the evolution of one of our most important American freedoms from its earliest incarnation in the Maryland Colony to its role in contemporary society. The multi-panel exhibit highlights archaeological investigations undertaken at the 18th century Jonas and Anne Catherine Green printshop\, the importance of inclusive journalism outlets like Afro Charities\, and the persistence of local new sources like those supported by the Tiny News Collective. Public programming in host communities will include companion exhibits\, lecture panel presentations\, and other opportunities to highlight local stories. \nThe free exhibition will be on display in Frederick Community College’s MOSAIC Center from 8/25 to 9/14 from 9AM -4:30 Monday through Friday.

DESCRIPTION:Explore the incredible Civil War history in Downtown Frederick with expert guides from the National Museum of Civil War Medicine. \nEvery Saturday at 10:30 a.m. and Sunday at 12:00 p.m. from April until September\, docents from the National Museum of Civil War Medicine will explain how Frederick became “One Vast Hospital.” Arguably the most trying moment in city’s history came after the Battle of Antietam in the fall of 1862. The town’s population doubled when 8\,000 wounded soldiers were delivered by ambulance to make-shift hospitals throughout Frederick. Walking tours last for an hour to an hour and a half. \nTickets are $15 and include admission to the National Museum of Civil War Medicine in addition to the walking tour. Tickets are free for Museum members\, but you must still reserve your spot. DESCRIPTION:Join the Antietam Institute on September 5 as Institute member Cindy Cohrs-Brandt explores the battlefield experiences of two Union regiments at Antietam: the veteran 34th New York and the newly raised 13th New Jersey. Shaped by prior combat in the Peninsular Campaign\, the 34th New York entered the battle as seasoned soldiers\, while the 13th New Jersey faced its first engagement only weeks after mustering in. Each regiment confronted its own distinct challenges on the field at Antietam. Cindy’s ancestor presentation is called\, Discovering my Antietam roots: William Campbell\, 34th New York and Bennett Livingston\, 13th New Jersey. \nA native of New Jersey\, Cindy’s interest in the Civil War began in childhood when she walked Pickett’s Charge with her father. That experience left a lasting impression and sparked a fascination that grew into a lifelong passion for Civil War history. \nCindy holds a BA in American History from Drew University\, a Master’s in Library Science from Emory University\, and a Master’s in Teaching from Montclair State University. After working as a corporate librarian\, she now serves as a school librarian\, where she enjoys sharing her love of history and research with her students. \nThrough her interest in genealogy\, Cindy discovered two Civil War ancestors—one from each side of her family—deepening her personal connection to the conflict. Antietam is her favorite battlefield\, where both ancestors fought in close proximity\, and visiting all the battlefields where they served remains a lifelong goal.

SUMMARY:164th Commemoration of the Battle of South Mountain / Crampton's Gap
DESCRIPTION:The Burkittsville Preservation Association is proud to host two days of living history\, education and fun at the Shafer Farm outside of Burkittsville\, Maryland! This event will commemorate the 164th anniversary of the Battle of South Mountain\, specifically the fighting at Crampton’s Gap. \nBeginning at 10am\, the living history camps will be open to the public at Shafer Farm on Saturday\, September 12 and Sunday\, September 13\, 2026. Shafer Farm was a major camp for the United States VI Corps prior to the fighting at Crampton’s Gap. Living history reenactors will portray camp life on campaign\, the struggles of the civilian population and give firing demonstrations periodically throughout the day. \nThere will also be guest speakers on site in the Shafer Barn discussing the fighting at South Mountain and the men who took part in that battle. \nSaturday: Camps open at 10am\, close at 5pm \nLectures are at 12 and 2pm with potential firing demonstrations at 11am\, 1pm and 3pm. \nSunday: Camps open at 10am\, close at 2pm \nLecture at 12pm with firing demonstrations at 11am and 1pm.

DESCRIPTION:During the Civil War\, Alexandria was home to five military prisons. Speaker Madeline Fierstein will examine what life was like in these institutions for both Confederate and Union prisoners and how this disrupted the daily lives of Alexandria residents. Learn about the medical treatment of jailed soldiers and prisoners of war at hospitals like the confiscated Lee-Fendall House. You will hear first-hand accounts from those who experienced imprisonment within the city limits\, from the earliest days of battle to the beginning of Reconstruction. \nMadeline Fierstein is a historian of American history based in Alexandria\, Va. She is the founder of “Rooted in Place”\, LLC\, which focuses on psychiatric institutions\, military hospitals\, and prisons. Madeline has developed popular guided tours in Alexandria and Washington\, D.C. She leads significant projects documenting the soldiers who were treated in Alexandria’s wartime hospitals. DESCRIPTION:Tim Snyder will talk about an early Confederate seizure of two canal boats at Berlin (Brunswick)\, MD\, in April 1861 and the ensuing resolution of the dispute between Maryland and Virginia\, which involved the appointing of commissioners\, visits to the site\, and actions by both state legislatures. Tim lives in Hagerstown and is the author of several books and articles that have appeared in a variety of journals\, magazines\, and newsletters. \nThis event is sponsored jointly by the Middletown Valley Historical Society and the Frederick County Public Library\, Middletown branch.
