The failure of Confederate clandestine operations in the latter part of the American Civil War to prevent Lincoln’s reelection are generally attributed to ineptness\, poor planning\, and a last-minute loss of nerve by the collaborators. There is some truth to this\, yet it is undeniable that the Lincoln Administration received an early leg-up on Rebel plans that proved consequential.
