Of all the Signers of the Declaration of Independence, only one was Roman Catholic, and among the wealthiest men in colonial America. He was Charles Carroll of Carrollton, Frederick County’s own Signer.
This presentation describes Carroll’s Irish roots, the early Maryland settlement, his European education, and his many reasons for supporting Maryland’s independence from British rule. Carroll’s legacy includes contributions to the Bill of Rights, transportation, agriculture, and commerce. Also Included are the interesting roles of his descendants.
